Why were Institutes of Technology (IoTs) created?

The Government is the driving force behind Institutes of Technology. IoTs tackle the skill gaps in high level technical education in the UK, with a particular focus on the STEM sector (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

There are only 12 Institutes of Technology in the UK, which were selected through a government-led competition. We are delighted and proud to be one of those 12, working towards a technically skilled West London.

What makes an Institute of Technology different?

IoTs are collaborations between further education (FE) providers, universities and employers. We specialise in delivering higher technical education in subjects, such as engineering and digital. IoTs focus on the specific technical skills needs required in their area. They work in partnership will employers and provide them with a skilled workforce whilst also giving students with a clear route to technical employment.

Where is SWIOT based?

We run courses through our partners across all of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.

What courses does SWIOT offer?

Through our partners we offer the widest range of Level 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 courses available in Digital and Engineering qualifications. There is more detail about specific courses on the ‘Digital courses’ and ‘Engineering courses’ pages.

What do the ‘levels’ of courses mean?

Most qualifications have a difficulty level. The higher the level, the more difficult the qualification is. A more extensive list can be found here
